NAD+ is involved in essential chemical reactions inside cells. That makes it an interesting research subject. It does not, by itself, show that injecting more NAD+ improves energy, memory, recovery, or lifespan.
The most useful way to read a treatment claim is to ask three questions: what was given, to whom, and what changed? Keeping those questions separate makes the science much easier to follow, even without a medical background.

Begin with the molecule
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is a coenzyme: a molecule that helps enzymes carry out reactions. NAD+ and NADH participate in transferring electrons, including processes involved in cellular energy production. NAD-related pathways also have other important biological roles.

Read the route before the headline

What the 2019 pilot measured
A frequently cited 2019 study followed NAD-related changes in plasma and urine during a six-hour IV infusion. It involved 11 men: eight receiving NAD+ and three controls. This was a small investigation of metabolism, not a demonstration that home injections improve daily functioning or extend life.
A small study can help researchers decide what to investigate next. It cannot reliably settle uncommon adverse effects, long-term use, or results in every age group. Treat it as one piece of a developing literature rather than a universal treatment recommendation.
A biomarker is not the same as a benefit
A laboratory measurement may change without an improvement in how a person feels or functions. Clinical outcomes might include a validated symptom score, a functional task, or a clearly defined health event. Ask which kind of outcome supports the claim you are reading.
Customer surveys and testimonials answer a different question again: what respondents believe happened. Expectations, other treatments, changes in sleep, and selective follow-up can influence those reports. They can be interesting without proving a cause-and-effect relationship.
Build an evidence-aware treatment conversation
